Solo Notebooks Sweep Best Buys, Take Editor's Choice

When it comes to portable PCs, conventional thinking says you can concentrate on budget machines or tweak up some ultra-buff power portables.

But Gateway considers conventional thinking overrated, so we focused on both budget and power. Works for us.

And it worked for PC World and PC Magazine as well, winning the Gateway SoloTM 2300 three major awards from those publications in January.

Editors Choice

The Gateway Solo 2300 won PC Magazines Editors Choice award in the Jan. 20 issue featuring notebooks with Intel Pentium® processors with MMXTM technology.

"The SoloTM 2300's blend of good performance, long battery life and attractive price make it an especially compelling option . . . ," PC World wrote in their Jan. 20 issue. "The units battery life, a stunning 4:44, was among the best in the roundup."¹

"The awards the Gateway Solo notebook line earned this month alone verify that our commitment to common modularity, value pricing and technology-leading features benefits our customers," said Bart Brown, Vice President of Marketing, Gateway Direct.

One PC takes both Power and Budget Best Buys

PC World gave the Gateway Solo 2300 PC Best Buy awards for January in both the Power Notebook (priced more than $2,749) and Budget Notebook (priced less than $2,749) categories. The magazine gives monthly Best Buy awards based on performance, price, reliability, features and design, battery life and travel weight.

An earlier model, the Gateway Solo 2100, won both budget and power notebook Best Buys in February and March 1997 PC World issues.

"This is an amazing accomplishment," Bob Burnett, Director of Mobile Systems at Gateway said of the Best Buy sweep. "As far as I know, no other company has ever accomplished winning both power and budget notebook Best Buys in a month, yet weve now done it three times."

Gateway Solo 2300XL

"Gateway 2000s latest Pentium MMX-233 notebook has nearly all the qualities we like in a laptop, including knockout speed, long battery life, and a great selection of software,"² PC World wrote in its January 1998 edition. The 2300XL also earned the Best Buy citation in Decembers PC World issue.

The Solo 2300XL, powered by an Intel 233MHz Pentium®: processor with MMXTM technology, posted the fastest benchmark score ever recorded by a power notebook in PC World Best Buy testing, the magazine reported.

PC World tested a 2300XL configuration priced at $3,749, was $861 less than the second-place power notebook.

Gateway Solo 2300 SE

PC World credited the budget 2300SE's award to "an unmatched combination of strong performance, terrific battery life and solid features in a reasonably priced notebook."³

The 2300SE also blazed through speed tests, registering a score that was "the fastest ever for a (Pentium) 133(MHz) notebook and above average for the budget chart."³ The price of the tested configuration, $2,449, was more than $300 less than the second-place budget portable.

Jim Collas, Senior Vice President of Global Products at Gateway 2000 said the Solos past and current successes have earned the notebook a solid reputation. "We are honored to receive these awards and are excited to see the higher level of respect and esteem for the Gateway Solo product line."

Along with the 2300 model, Gateway sells the Solo 9100 power notebook designed to deliver desktop system features in a portable PC.
