Q: I loaded Windows 98 and now my LS-120 won't read or format my disks. What can I do?

A: Delete the Bus Master 2.XX driver and load the 98 driver by doing the following:

  1. On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Programs, then click Windows Explorer.

  2. Below the C: drive on the left-hand side of your screen, locate the C:\Piixide directory.

  3. click time on this folder to highlight it, then from the File pull down menu, click Delete.

  4. Click Yes to the Confirm Folder Delete window that appears.

  5. Show all files may need to be turned on.

    • Inside the Windows Explorer window, click View then Folder Options.
    • Click the View Tab from the Folder Options window.
    • Select Show all Files from the Advanced settings window.
    • Click OK.

  6. Delete the Ideatapi.INF in the C:\Windows\Inf folder.

    • From the Windows Explorer window, click the plus in front of the Windows folder.
    • Below the Windows folder, locate then click the Inf folder.
    • On the right-hand side of your screen, locate then click the file Ideatapi.inf so it is highlighted.
    • From the File pull down menu, click Delete. Click Yes to the Confirm File Delete window.

  7. Rebuild the Windows 98 Driver Database by doing the following.

    • While you are still in the C:\Windows\Inf folder, locate then click the file Drvdata.bin.
    • From the File pull down menu, click Rename.
    • Type Drvdata.sav then press the ENTER key on your keyboard to rename this file.
    • Click the file Drvidx.bin on the right-hand side of your screen.
    • From the File pull down menu, click Rename.
    • Type Drvidx.sav then press the ENTER key on your keyboard to rename this file.
    • Close the Windows Explorer window.
    • On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
    • From the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon. From System Properties, click the Device Manager tab.
    • From the Device Manager window, double-click Hard disk controllers.
    • Highlight the Intel PCI Bus Master IDE Controller then click Remove. Click OK to the Confirm Device Removal window, then close the System Properties window.
    • On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Shut Down.
    • From the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer?, then click Yes.

  8. After restarting, Windows 98 will rebuild the driver database.
