Q: What does degaussing do?

A: Degaussing removes magnetism from a device. The term usually is used with color monitors and other display devices that use a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT). These devices aim electrons onto the display screen by creating magnetic fields inside the CRT. External magnetic forces can magnetize the shadow mask. External forces include the natural magnetism of the earth or a magnet placed near the monitor. Magnetizing the shadow mask causes distorted images and colors.
