How Do I...?

Q: How do I get rid of that Windows 95 Password Box that keeps appearing when the computer starts?

A: Some programs may require this log-on screen in order to work properly, so before taking any steps to bypass this screen, ensure that none of your programs or online services require it. If you are confident that you do not need or want this screen use the following instructions:

  1. locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Passwords. Click the User Profiles tab.

  3. Select All Users Use the Same Preferences. Click OK.

  4. locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders....

  5. Type *.pwl in Named: box then click Find Now.

  6. When the computer has finished searching, from the Edit menu, click Select All. Then from the File menu click Delete.

  7. Close all open windows. On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Shut Down. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart the computer, then click Yes.

  8. When Windows has restarted, you are prompted for a username and password. Type in a username, but leave the password blank. Click OK.

  9. You are prompted to confirm the password. Press ENTER.
