Windows XP Home Installation – Repair

  1. From the Start menu, click Run.

  2. In the Run dialog box, in the Open text box, type: cmd. Click OK.

  3. In the C:\WINNT\System32\cmd.exe dialog box, type: del /a /f c:\winnt\system32\undo_guimode.txt. Press the ENTER key.

    Note: If the message Could not find C:\Winnt\System32\Undo_guimode.txt is displayed, then the file was not created. Proceed to step 4.

  4. In the C:\WINNT\System32\cmd.exe dialog box, type: exit. Press ENTER.

  5. Verify that the computer is turned off, and then disconnect all USB devices such as a printer, scanner, or camera. This does not include a USB mouse or keyboard.

  6. Start up the computer with the Operating System CD in the CD-ROM drive. When prompted to start from the CD, press any key. If you miss the message and arrive at a blinking cursor, restart the computer and try pressing any key again when the message appears.

  7. Windows XP Setup prepares to run. If you need to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver, press the F6 key during startup.

  8. The option for an Automated System Recovery appears momentarily.

  9. Setup loads the files necessary for the installation, and then starts Windows.

  10. The Windows XP Home Edition Setup screen appears. Verify that the correct partition is selected, in this case Partition 1 (NTFS). Press the ENTER key to set up Windows XP on the selected item.

  11. The End User License Agreement (EULA) appears. Press the F8 key to accept the EULA.

  12. Windows Setup detects a previous installation of Windows XP. Press the R key to repair the installation.

  13. A Setup screen appears briefly stating that Setup is examining the hard drive.

  14. The Windows XP Home Edition Setup screen shows the progress of file copying.

  15. Setup initializes the Windows XP configuration.

  16. The Windows XP Home Edition Setup screen shows that this portion of Setup is complete. The Operating System CD remains in the drive, but remove any floppy disks. Press ENTER to restart the computer or wait until the computer restarts automatically.

  17. The computer restarts. If you are prompted to "boot from CD", do not press any keys. Allow the computer to start uninterrupted. By "booting to CD", the setup process starts over again.

  18. The computer restarts and Windows Setup reaches the Installing Windows phase.

  19. In the Windows XP Professional Setup dialog box, select I accept this agreement, and then click Next.

  20. Setup starts and continues various file copying tasks.

  21. In the Windows XP Home Edition Setup dialog box, review the regional and language options, and then click Next.

  22. Type your full name and the name of your company or organization, if applicable, and then click Next.

  23. If necessary, type the name of your computer or accept the default option, and then click Next.

  24. Type the correct modem dialing information, and then click Next.

  25. Check the date and time settings. Type the correct information, and then click Next.

  26. If a network card is installed, the Network settings screen appears. On the Network settings screen, select Typical settings, and then click Next.

    Note: After Windows XP is installed, use the Network Wizard to finalize settings.

  27. Windows Setup continues copying files.

  28. After files are copied, the computer restarts. If you are prompted to "boot from CD", do not press any keys. Allow the computer to start uninterrupted. By "booting to CD", the setup process starts over again.

  29. In the Display Settings dialog box, click OK.

    Note: This dialog box and the following Monitor Settings dialog box may not open, depending on the video configuration in the computer.

  30. In the Monitor Settings dialog box, click OK.

  31. Setup returns to a Windows environment with a Welcome screen. Click Next.

  32. If there is a network interface controller (NIC) in the computer, Windows XP checks for Internet connectivity on the network.

  33. On the How will this computer connect to the Internet screen, click Skip. Use the Internet Connection Wizard after the installation is completed.

    Note: This screen only appears if there is a NIC in the computer.

  34. Windows Setup prompts you to register online. Registration is optional. If you do not want to register now, select No, not at this time, and then click Next. If you choose to register at this time, registration information is collected.

  35. If a modem is installed, Windows Setup prompts you to set up Internet access now. Select No, not at this time, and then click Next.

  36. Windows Setup needs to know who is going to use this computer. The user names typed here appear in alphabetical order on the Welcome screen.

  37. Windows Setup transitions to the desktop and briefly displays a Welcome screen.

  38. The Windows XP Home desktop appears. The repair installation is finished.
