How to install modem drivers for the U.S. Robotics® TelePath Voice 56K® Faxmodem in Windows® 95

Note: These instructions pertain to the installation of TelePath Voice 56K Faxmodem drivers in Windows 95. The Gateway part number of the hardware pertaining to these instructions is 6000768 only. The modem drivers themselves are available on disk, Gateway Restoration CDs, and are available to be downloaded. (See below)

These instructions assume the A drive is the floppy disk drive. If using a CD-ROM drive for these installations, address the CD-ROM drive by using its given drive letter (most often its letter D or E).

When and why is this necessary?

Important: There are two different modem driver installation procedures below. When using a Gateway Restoration CD, an automated procedure is possible. Under some circumstances, an automated driver installation might not work properly. If installing these drivers fresh (that is, the entire computer has been reloaded and no driver software for the modem has been installed) the automated procedure should work fine. If otherwise, when installing the modem drivers (that is, reinstalling or updating to newer drivers), the manual procedure will likely work best.

Automated procedure (using a Restoration CD version 5.5 or later only):

  1. Insert the Restoration CD in the CD-ROM drive and the Gateway System Restoration CD window automatically appears.

Note: If nothing automatically appears, AutoPlay has been disabled within Windows on the computer.

    • On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
    • In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon.
    • In the System Properties dialog box, click the Device Manager tab. On the Device Manager tab, double-click CD-ROM, then double-click the CD-ROM drive that is listed here.
    • In the next dialog box, click the Settings tab. On the Settings tab, select the Auto insert notification check box, then click OK.
    • Click the Close button to close the System Properties dialog box, then close the Control Panel window to return to your desktop.

  2. Click the Hardware Drivers tab, then click to place a checkmark next to the Modem selection. Click Install Now to continue.

  3. A message stating the driver was installed will appear. Click OK and the computer will restart to complete the driver installation.

Manual procedure:

  1. Remove all modem references from the Windows Device Manager.(How to)

  2. Restart the computer: On your screen, locate and click the Start button. From the Start menu, click Shutdown. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, select Restart the computer, then click Yes.

  3. As Windows restarts, "New Hardware" will be found. At this point one of two things might happen...
    • Windows will automatically (through Plug and Play technology) install the proper driver software. If this happens, messages will quickly flash on-screen, the Windows desktop will appear as normal, and the modem driver installation will be complete.
    • The Windows Add New Hardware Wizard will begin.

  4. If Windows automatically installs the proper driver software, attempt to use the modem (connect to the Internet, send a fax, etc.). If the modem still fails to function, see below.

If the Add New Hardware Wizard begins, click Next and continue below.

  5. If you have a driver disk, part number 7502442, use the following instructions.

    • Place the disk in the floppy disk drive, then click Next to let Windows search for the driver.
    • Moments later, Windows reports that it has found an updated driver for a TelePath Voice 56K Faxmodem PNP.

  6. If you have a Restoration CD, version 5.5 or later, use the following instructions.

    • Place the CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD AutoPlays and a window appears, click the Close button to close the window.
    • Click Next to let Windows search. Moments later Windows reports it is unable to find an updated driver. Click Other Locations.
    • Type: d:\win95-98\modem\tp56kfax (where d:\ is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK.
    • Moments later, Windows reports that it has found an updated driver for the Telepath with x2 Technology PNP.

  7. Click Finish.

At this point, Windows might detect a Wave Device, or something similar.

    • If a driver disk was used keep the disk in the drive, click Next to let Windows search for the driver, then click Finish once Windows has located the driver for the Wave Device.
    • If a Restoration CD was used keep the CD used with the prior steps in the computer and click Next. Moments later Windows reports it is unable to find an updated driver. Click the Other Locations button.
    • Type: d:\win95-98\modem\tp56kfax (where d:\ is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive). Click OK.
    • Click Finish once Windows has located the driver for the Wave Device.

  8. The driver installation is complete. Attempt to use the modem (connect to the Internet, send a fax, etc.)

If the modem still does not function properly, after following the driver installation procedure outlined above, perform a test to determine whether or not Windows can communicate (not dial out) with the modem. The result of this test could help determine what action(s) to take (other than installing modem drivers) that will resolve whatever issue is preventing the modem from functioning properly. (How to)

For advanced users: If Windows cannot communicate with the modem (after attempting the modem test indicated above), or the driver installation is otherwise not going according to the procedure above, some further steps might have to be taken to remove existing modem drivers and references before an installation of the drivers will enable the modem to function properly. This includes removing the %Gateway%GWYWAV2 and GatewayGWY0038 modem information files from the windows\inf\other directory, and removing the usr101 key from the Windows Registry, before beginning step 1 of the procedure above.
