How to Install Sound Drivers for the Ensoniq® AudioPCI Sound Card in Windows® 95 and Windows 98

(Ensoniq 1370 Chipset Only)


Important Note:The instructions in this document are specific to Ensoniq AudioPCI sound hardware included with the purchase of a Gateway PC or purchased as an add-on product from Gateway. The Gateway part numbers specific to the Ensoniq hardware pertaining to these instructions are 600566, 600708, and Gateway system motherboards integrated with Ensoniq AudioPCI sound (see list). The drivers are available on diskette, many Gateway System CD's and Restoration CD's, and are available for download (see below).

Note Concerning Creative Labs® SoundBlaster" AudioPCI 64V : Creative Labs Inc. is now the parent company to the Ensoniq Corp. "SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V" is the new name given by Creative Labs Inc. for the same integrated sound hardware (with 1370 chipset) on many Gateway system motherboards (see list). Procedure:
When and why is this necessary?

Using a Gateway System CD
  1. Insert the System CD into the CD-ROM drive. Wait a few seconds and a screen should automatically appear* . Click the mouse button anywhere to stop the video and go to the main menu.

    * If nothing automatically appears "AutoPlay" has been disabled within Windows on the system. Double clicking My Computer, right clicking the CD-ROM drive icon, and clicking "AutoPlay" from the menu will proceed to the next step.
  2. Click on System Software | Audio | Ensoniq PCI | Run/Install.



  3. A "Welcome to the AudioPCI..." window appears. Click Next.

  4. Click to select Remove and Install Software. Then click Next.

  5. Click Next again. During this part be patient, it will take a few moments.

  6. Click Next to continue installing the AudioPCI drivers.

  7. If prompted, insert the Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM, in place of the System CD, and click OK. If not prompted to do so it is not necessary and the installation will continue.

  8. Click Next to install DOS utilities.

  9. Click Next and then on the following screen click Next again to accept the "destination directory".

  10. The system must be restarted to complete the installation. Choose "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" and click OK to restart it now, or choose "No, I will restart my computer later". If "No" is chosen the driver installation will be complete any time in the future when the system is restarted.


Using a Gateway Restoration CD

Important note: The Ensoniq corporation is now a part of Creative Labs Inc. The Creative Labs SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V installation on the Restoration CD is compatible with an Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card. After installation of these drivers from a Restoration CD the sound system will be referred to as "Creative Labs SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V " on the system.

  1. Insert the Restoration CD in the CD-ROM drive and the Gateway System Restoration CD window will automatically appear. *

    * If nothing automatically appears "AutoPlay" has been disabled within Windows on the system. Double clicking My Computer, right clicking the CD-ROM drive icon, and clicking "AutoPlay" from the menu will proceed with the next step.
  2. Click on the Hardware Drivers tab and then on the Sound Card button. With Restoration CD versions 5.7 and later click the box to place a check next to the item "Sound Card" and then click Install Now to continue.

  3. The installation will begin. Click Next.

  4. Click to choose "Remove and Install Software" (if not already chosen), then click Next to continue (regardless of the circumstances choosing "Remove and Install Software" is the best choice).

  5. Click Next to begin with the software removal.

  6. Click Next to begin with the software install when prompted.

  7. Click Next to install the DOS utilities.

  8. Click Next to the Sound Blaster SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V install.

  9. Click Next to accept the Destination Directory.

  10. The system must be restarted to complete the installation. Choose "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" and click OK to restart it now, or choose "No, I will restart my computer later". If "No" is chosen the driver installation will be complete any time in the future when the system is restarted.


Using floppy diskettes
  1. Insert disk 1 of 7 into the floppy drive

  2. Click Start | Run.

  3. In the "open" line, from the very beginning, type a:\setup and click OK.

  4. Click Next to continue and click Next to accept the destination directories.

  5. The installation will need to copy the information form all 7 diskettes at this time. When requested remove the used diskette and insert the unused diskette in sequence when prompted to do so, clicking OK continues the installation when the proper disk is inserted.

  6. A "Welcome to the AudioPCI..." window appears. Click Next.

  7. Click to select Remove and Install Software. Then click Next.

  8. Click Next again. During this part be patient, it will take a few moments.

  9. Click Next to continue installing the AudioPCI drivers.

  10. If prompted to insert the Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM, do so, and click OK. If not prompted to do so it is not necessary and the installation will continue.

  11. Click Next to install DOS utilities.

  12. Click Next and then on the following screen click Next again to accept the "destination directory".

  13. The system must be restarted to complete the installation. Choose "Yes, I want to restart my computer now" and click OK to restart it now, or choose "No, I will restart my computer later". If "No" is chosen the driver installation will be complete any time in the future when the system is restarted.

About Creative Labs SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V hardware: Downloading and installing the currently available Ensoniq AudioPCI sound drivers from our web site IS compatible with this hardware (see note concerning Creative Labs SoundBlaster AudioPCI 64V above). Note that the system will report the sound hardware in the system as being that of whichever driver (Ensoniq or Creative Labs) is installed in support of it.
